What is EIRA?

EIRA is a movement dedicated to advancing Social Impact in Health through Knowledge, Recognition and Community. It creates human spaces where people, institutions and recognised voices can reflect on what meaningful impact really means - and on what must change for health and human wellbeing to improve. EIRA is not only a Gathering, an awards history or a community. It is a movement that connects dialogue, recognition, shared learning and community activation across time.

Why EIRA exists

Innovation alone does not guarantee impact. Innovation creates possibilities. Impact improves lives. EIRA exists because Social Impact in Health requires more than solutions. It requires knowledge people can trust, recognition that makes meaningful work visible, and a community able to carry reflection into action. In a world with more information than ever, the challenge is not only to know more. It is to understand better, recognise what matters and act with greater responsibility.

A story that began in 2005

EIRA did not begin as a brand or as a programme. Its roots go back to 2005, when Trifermed began gathering friends, collaborators and people connected to health and society through what became the Trifermed Social Evening. What began as a social meeting gradually became a trusted space for connection, shared purpose and community around health and social responsibility. Over time, that original intuition evolved into something more explicit: a way to recognise people and initiatives whose work could help others see what meaningful impact in health might look like.

From Social Evening to Recognition

In 2015, the Trifermed Awards for Social Impact in Health gave that intuition a clearer form. Recognition became a way to bring attention to people and initiatives working to improve health, dignity and human wellbeing. The Awards created moments where Curators, Laureates and a wider community could gather around work that deserved to be seen, understood and remembered. EIRA carries that history forward. It preserves the trust, recognition and community energy built through previous editions, while giving them a broader movement architecture for the future.

The name EIRA

The name EIRA carries the memory of healing. It echoes Eir - also remembered as EIRA - a figure in Nordic tradition associated with care, restoration and the art of healing. For EIRA, healing is not only clinical. It is also social, institutional and human: the work of recognising difference, restoring dignity and creating conditions for people and communities to flourish.

The sculpture

The sculpture gave EIRA a visible form. Created by Brazilian artist Nilza Silva, the EIRA sculpture represents solidarity in action through collaboration and mutual understanding. Its two human forms, different from one another and joined through hands and heads, express a simple but powerful idea: meaningful change begins when difference is recognised, accepted and brought into shared action. What was first created as a symbol of recognition has become part of EIRA's identity: a reminder that Social Impact in Health depends on knowledge, recognition, community and the human capacity to work together across differences.

The Founder and Stewart

EIRA was initiated by Sergi X. Trilla, M.D., M.B.A., founder of trifermed and the person who first convened the annual gatherings from which EIRA's recognition legacy emerged.

His professional path has moved across medical practice, pharmaceutical leadership, healthcare strategy, entrepreneurship and international advisory work. Throughout that path, a constant concern has remained: how to help people and organisations make better judgements when health, innovation and society meet under uncertainty.

In 2002, Sergi founded trifermed, a name rooted in a founding partnership between medical doctors and in the conviction that progress in health depends on trusted relationships, long-term judgement and collaboration across boundaries.

What began in 2005 as a small annual gathering gradually became a wider human space for connection. In 2015, that community evolved into the Trifermed Awards, recognising people, organisations and initiatives whose work created meaningful Social Impact in Health.

EIRA carries that history forward. It reflects Sergi Trilla's belief that impact in health is not created by innovation alone. It also requires recognition, trust, collective judgement and the courage to bring different forms of knowledge into the same room.

EIRA is therefore not a personal project. It is a movement built from a founding act of convening: bringing people together to recognise what improves lives, to learn from those who have made impact real, and to activate a community around what still needs to change.
